All of this genealogy work is so precarious and uncertain.

When we were in Fairmount last month, we saw the Friends "Church" that Enoch would have attended with his family. It did not resemble the picture you sent, but the one we saw was probably redone much later. I am thinking that his "conversion" to the Congregationalists was as much because of his desire to divorce my great grandmother, Eleanor, and marry his stepdaughter, Idella (3 in the picture) than it was taking an oath. I think you hit the nail on the head about his progressiveness. Another black mark against him was that he fought in the Civil War, the Quakers being staunch pacifists.

You are doing a really fine job explaining the openness and modern ways of thinking of the Quakers in the 19th century in the US. It troubles me that people associate them with the Shakers (who died out, because they decided having sex was sinful), Mennonites, Amish, etc. Quakers live in this world, not in the past.Johnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04245176510528401745noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7174221584921205407.post-4541163568944597712010-06-12T00:17:13.836+09:002010-06-12T00:17:13.836+09:00I loved this and your uncle will be so pleased tha...I loved this and your uncle will be so pleased that you are joining him in this genealogical journey of family, and along with it, the Quakers.Harriethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12608656315419060272noreply@blogger.com
